Two Clocks on a Fly-In Day
A couple landing the day before a sailing runs on two clocks, and the hour written into the thread has to belong to the one in the hotel room.
The mistake is not common but it is expensive when it happens, and it always happens the same way. A couple flying in from a long way west agrees an hour in the thread without saying which clock it belongs to, and everybody proceeds confidently in different directions.
The clock that counts
The one in the room the two of you will be standing in. Amsterdam time, written out, with the date attached where the evening runs anywhere near midnight. That sounds obvious until you have been awake for nineteen hours and are typing in an airport with a phone that has already changed itself and a watch that has not.
A booking confirmed for nine means nine in Amsterdam, and if there is the smallest doubt about that, ask in the thread. Nobody has ever been thought slow for confirming a time twice.
The second clock, which is harder to read
The one inside you. A couple who left home at six in the morning and lands at six in the evening has been up for something like a day and a half, and the plan they made in February was made by two people who were not tired.
What that does in practice is push the sensible start earlier, not later. Two people on different internal clocks do best with an early evening, because the early hour is the one they still share. A session at half past eight catches both of you awake. One at eleven catches one of you awake and one of you asleep on top of the covers with the light on.
How much evening there actually is
Less than a landing time suggests. A six o'clock arrival becomes a passport queue, a bag hall, a transfer and a check-in, which puts the two of you in a room somewhere around half past seven at best. The arrival window runs after that, not inside it.
Which is why the useful thing to do at the carousel is write. The date, the hour, the length, one therapist or two, the district. Get the exchange done while you are waiting for a case, and the forty to sixty minutes can run while you check in and eat something.
Staying by the airport
Plenty of fly-in couples do, either because the transfer collects from there or because nobody wanted to move twice after a long flight. Those rooms are reachable and they are arranged differently: a Schiphol airport hotel sits outside the central window, so the journey is agreed with the two of you in writing before the hour is fixed.
A room there also carries half the fee in advance on its own account, whatever the notice. In practice that changes nothing for a couple who booked in February, since a booking made more than twenty-four hours ahead carries it anyway.
When the flight moves
Write as soon as the board changes rather than when you land. More than twenty-four hours out, the evening simply moves to another date inside fourteen days at no cost. Inside the final day, a flight moved by an airline is read on the notice scale like any other change, because it sits on your side of the line rather than on the force majeure side of it.
The scale is short. Nothing kept beyond twenty-four hours. Half the deposit kept inside the final day while she has not yet left. The whole deposit once she is on her way, repaid in full if somebody else takes the hour, and reduced to the actual loss where that loss was smaller. Nothing is ever claimed beyond the deposit, and cancelling never makes either of you liable for damages.
What to book on a day like that
Something short enough to survive the state the two of you are in. Ninety minutes is the usual answer on a fly-in night and it is the right one: long enough to be a real evening, short enough to leave a night behind it, and forgiving of two people who have been in an aluminium tube since breakfast.
The long booking belongs at the other end of the trip, on the night the ship lets you go, when there is nothing printed on the morning and both clocks have finally agreed with each other.
